Watch 40: A Shark at the Opera
Since we reached another milestone, it’s time for a Music Watch! This time around I chose the Queen album A Night at the Opera (thanks to the suggestion from my boss). For those of you playing at home, I’m starting The Meg (Google Play) and the album* (Spotify) at 0:00, and hitting play at the exact same time (the album was set to play on a loop).
- The guitar solo from ‘Death On Two Legs’ started right when the meg hit the sub during the opening scene.
- I don’t think there’s going to be a single scene where ‘I’m In Love With My Car’ works. But while we’re on the subject, what is up with that song???
- The lyrics to ‘You’re My Best Friend’ kicked in the Second Mac appeared on screen and Oh Man that worked for me on a very personal level!
- “I’ve been with you such a long time, You’re my sunshine” – Literally Mac getting me through all these watches.
- The song ‘‘39’ began right after Lori’s sub cleared the cloud.
“And they bring good news of a world so newly born” – played as footage while everyone marveled at the newly discovered sea life. - ‘Seaside Rendezvous’ began playing right before Jason Statham and Mac reunited and let me tell you… that painted the scene in a completely different light…
- “Oh oh people of the earth, Listen to the warning” (The Prophet Song) – played as Lori realized turning on the lights would bring the shark back.
- “Listen to the madman” – played as Statham says the lines “I’m not crazy. I’ve just seen things no one else has.”
- “If I’m not back again this time tomorrow, Carry on, carry on” (Bohemian Rhapsody) – played over the moment Toshi slipped the note into The Wall’s pocket and closed the hatch.
- The lyrics “Too late my time has come” were sung the exact same time that Toshi died.
- “I’m just a poor boy nobody loves me” played immediately after Suyin finished yelling at Statham.
- For future reference, if you’re ever planning on doing a powerpoint presentation on sharks, the song ‘God Save the Queen’ works surprisingly well as background music.
- The lyric “Shark” from Death On Two Legs played the Second Meiying saw the Shark through the glass.
- ‘I’m In Love With My Car’ still does not work.
- ‘You’re My Best Friend’ adds 500% more sunshine to any scene. Even if it includes Statham swimming after a giant killer shark.
- “Don’t you hear my call though you’re many years away” (‘39) – plays as the characters called out to Statham as he was being chased by the shark.
- “You don’t believe that I’m alone” (Sweet Lady) – plays as Suyin is looking around in the shark cage at the empty ocean, knowing there’s a shark out there somewhere.
- Having ‘Seaside Rendezvous’ play as Statham tries to save Suyin from the meg really adds a Benny Hill vibe to the whole scene.
- “Oh, fear for your life” (The Prophet’s Song) – plays as The Wall is in the water, moments before he is swallowed whole by the meg.
- ‘Love of My Life’ plays over Suyin and Zhang’s final moments together, adding a more somber layer to the song while reflecting on familial love.
- “So you think you can love me and leave me to die” (Bohemian Rhapsody) – plays as Morris falls off the boat, leading to him being eaten by the meg.
- Having ‘Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon’ play while the Meg terrorizes Sanya Bay really changes the vibe of the whole scene, but it kind of works???
- ‘I’m In Love With My Car’ STILL does not work.
- “Ne’er looked back, never feared, never cried” (‘39) – plays as Statham says goodbye to Suyin and prepares to face off against the meg.
- “You call me up and treat me like a dog” (Sweet Lady) – plays while Statham stares in confusion at the dog swimming next to them.
*The album A Night at the Opera has two repeated/remastered songs on Spotify (‘I’m in Love With My Car’ & ‘You’re My Best Friend’). To avoid possibly messing with the flow of the album (and also because I refuse to listen to ‘I’m In Love With My Car’ more than absolutely necessary) those repeats were omitted.
